Guide 04

The gorge, the old village and the coast path

The Mani had no proper roads until the 1970s. The mule tracks that served it instead are still there, still walkable, and they are the reason this is a walking region as much as a swimming one.

The house on its hillside above Kalamitsi, among the olives and the scrub.

Down to the bay

The shortest walk is straight down the hill to Kalamitsi bay. Twenty minutes down through olives to a beach that is usually nearly empty, and a proper climb back. Take water and go early.

Along to the writer's house

Patrick Leigh Fermor built his house on this bay and left it to the Benaki Museum. It is about ten minutes on foot from here, and you can visit on a scheduled tour.

Visits are booked online, they are short and fixed, and the booking window opens a month ahead. Put the first of the month before you travel in your calendar now. That is the whole trick.

Old Kardamyli and the Viros gorge

Climb up to Old Kardamyli, the fortified quarter above the modern village. Tower, wall, church and graves in one compound, and the best short introduction to what the Mani actually was.

From there, walk into the mouth of the Viros gorge as far as you feel like and turn round. You are on the old mule tracks, and the history stops being history and starts being something under your boots.

When to walk

April and May, when there is water in the gorges and the wildflowers are working their way uphill, or late September and October. In July and August walk before nine or after six, and not at all in the middle of the day in the south.
